In Greece, on the first day of every month, Greeks wish each other “Kalo Mina” – a good month. Because something new is starting and for this new time they wish each other all the best.
“Kali”, “Kalo”, “Kalon” constantly, during the day, escape the lips of Greeks.
“Kali-mera” – good morning
“Kali evdomada” – good week – on Monday
“Kalo mesimeri” – good afternoon
“Kalo apogewma” – good, late afternoon
“Kalispera” – when they greet each other in the evening
“Kalo vradi” – when they wish each other a nice evening
“Kalinihta” – good night
“Kalo Savvatokiriako” – good weekend
“Kali ksekurasi” – good rest
“Kali oreksi” – bon appetit
On the island of Rhodes, because it is a tourist island, and for 6 months we are busy serving our guests here, there are additional, very often used phrases, as below:
“Kalo Kalokieri” – good summer
“Kali sezon” – good season
“Kales dulies” – good work
“Kalo taxidi” – good journey
And at the end of the season, when the first rain has already fallen in September, you can hear wishes of “Kalo Ximona” – a good winter.
The way in which the Rhodians greet each other every day, with a smile and full commitment, and the belief that this day will definitely be better than yesterday, enchanted me.
And the beautiful thing is that here you are a simple, ordinary resident, but a noticeable person to whom even the Mayor of Rhodes will say “Kalimera, ti kanis?” – Good morning, how are you?
I also wish you a wonderful, healthy, successful month of September, “Kalo Mina!”
