As far back as I can remember, Greek music has always been in my family home.
My mother loved Demis Russos and whenever she had a free moment she would put on her CD with his music and sing along.
That is why I strongly believe that my love for Greece began in my family home.
I read a lot of travel books, I was very interested in ancient history, and above all the history of ancient Greece.
For me, Greece has always been associated with the sun, music and ancient monuments that I hoped to see someday.
My first trip to Greece, to the island of Zakynthos, was too short to get to know it all better, so I decided that my next vacation would also be in Greece.
When I found myself in Greece for the second time, on the island of Rhodes, I was immediately impressed by the noise everywhere – this island was completely different from Zakynthos!
I was surrounded by all sorts of noises: howling motorbikes, shouting Greeks and drivers on the streets of Rhodes, the bells of herds of sheep and goats running in the villages I visited, the braying of donkeys in Lindos, church bells – especially on Sundays.
But what caught my ears the most was the Greek language, and above all the Greek music coming from the windows of houses, cars, restaurants, nightclubs!
I was enchanted by it, especially the live music, which is loved and listened to constantly on the island of Rhodes, regardless of all the noise!
Everyone will find something for themselves here, from traditional folk music to good, well-known rock hits.
Music is also present in the Greek Orthodox Church, and you can listen to the most beautiful songs during Easter celebrations, and especially during the Good Friday celebrations, the so-called (Epitafios)
Music remains an inseparable element of everyday Greek life.
I also like Greek music, but the place that charmed me the most in Rhodes, and that’s why I decided to come back here every year, will probably surprise you. I’ll write about it in the next post, because it’s a long story. 🙂
